En Colombia unos 18 millones de habitantes son niños. De estos, más del 50% vive en condiciones de pobreza y cerca del 10% en condiciones de miseria. Y si bien hay que celebrar la temporada más significativa del cristianismo, también es momento para recordar a los cerca de 12 millones de niños que no recibirán un regalo en Navidad.

Así como la alegría, el espíritu de solidaridad prima en el día del nacimiento de Jesús. Es la época en la que los presentes simbolizan afecto y buenos deseos. Sin embargo, habrá muchos colombianos que verán cómo apenas una porción de sus compatriotas podrá gozar de cantos y obsequios en este día clave de la cristiandad. En especial aquellos niños que crecerán sintiendo cómo la sociedad en que viven no les ofrece posibilidades aun en aquellas ocasiones en que se supone que el bienestar, o al menos una ilusión de bienestar, debiera alcanzar para todos.

Y no es una situación pasajera, que tenga como causa los efectos de la última crisis global. Es una situación estructural, que explica, en buena parte, los males que padece Colombia. Un país católico en el que la mayoría de sus menores no puede gozar de las fiestas navideñas es un país con síntomas graves en su tejido social.

En un informe presentado ante el Foro Social Mundial, el respetado economista Luis Jorge Garay, explicaba esta enfermedad: “…un proceso de destrucción social, caracterizado por la creciente supeditación de lo público, la desintegración institucional del Estado y la pérdida de convivencia ciudadana, que tienen como raíz central la preeminencia de lo privado sobre lo público y de lo particular sobre el bien común…”.

Pero no todo puede ser pesimismo. Porque existe la Colombia que encuentra oportunidades. La que lucha por hallar respuestas silenciosas pero efectivas. Aquella que despierta a diario buscando formas de ayudar a quienes tienen problemas. La que propone cambios que sirvan para recuperar la equidad y explora a veces con desespero soluciones para sanar las heridas que deja la confrontación de décadas. Esa Colombia cree en la solidaridad con las víctimas de la violencia endémica y propone alternativas para romper la trampa del desempleo que golpea a millones de compatriotas.

El nuestro es entonces un país que debe seguir buscando una salida a situaciones como el desplazamiento que cambia a diario la vida de sus ciudades. Como el desempleo y la falta de oportunidades, que destruyen el tejido social y amenazan el capital humano. Como el rezago en las costumbres políticas, el desbarajuste del Estado y la indiferencia que atenta contra las instituciones creadas para atender las necesidades de la sociedad.

Colombia es pues un país que, al mostrar sus progresos incuestionables, también debe reconocer los esfuerzos que le faltan para lograr una sociedad más justa. Una Nación que debe encontrar en el espíritu de la Navidad cristiana la solidaridad y el amor que requiere para que todas sus familias y todos sus niños, sin distinción alguna, puedan gozar el derecho de disfrutarla en paz.

A Catholic country in which most of your minors cannot enjoy the Christmas parties is a country with serious symptoms in your social fabric.

A Nation that should find in the spirit of Christian Christmas the solidarity and the love that it require so that all your families and all your children, without some distinction, they can enjoy the right to enjoy it in peace.
