Dos guardias civiles muertos tras un atentado de ETA en Mallorca

Dos agentes de la Guardia Civil española murieron hoy en la turística isla de Mallorca, en un atentado atribuido a ETA, veinticuatro horas después de que la organización terrorista intentara una matanza en el norte de España cuando se cumplen 50 años de su creación.

Los agentes fueron alcanzados al explotar su coche patrulla al que había sido adosada en los bajos una bomba-lapa, que fue accionada a distancia en las inmediaciones del cuartel de la Guardia Civil en la localidad de Palmanova, en el municipio de Calvía, próximo a Palma de Mallorca.

Según el delegado del Gobierno en las Islas Baleares, Ramón Socías, las víctimas, que vestían de paisano y trabajaban en labores de mantenimiento, aparcaron el vehículo en las proximidades y tras entrar en el cuartel volvieron al coche que explotó cuando intentaban ponerlo de nuevo en marcha.

Apenas una hora después del atentado, que se produjo poco antes de las dos de la tarde (12:00 GMT), las autoridades pusieron en marcha la “Operación Jaula” y ordenaron el cierre del aeropuerto y el puerto de Palma de Mallorca para evitar que los terroristas pudieran abandonar la isla mediterránea, uno de los principales destinos turísticos de España, que cada año recibe decenas de miles de visitantes de toda Europa.

Palma de Mallorca es también el lugar elegido por la familia real española para pasar sus vacaciones de verano, habitualmente el mes de agosto, en el Palacio de Marivent.

Los Reyes de España se encuentran actualmente en visita oficial a la isla portuguesa de Madeira.

Los controles establecidos tras el atentado se extienden también a los puertos deportivos que hay en toda la isla.

El aeropuerto mallorquín, que fue reabierto a las 17:50 (las 15:50 GMT), es el tercero de España, sólo por detrás de los de Madrid-Barajas y El Prat de Barcelona, tanto en número de operaciones (193.379 en el año 2008) como de pasajeros (casi 23 millones en el mismo año).

Los dos agentes asesinados eran muy jóvenes y ambos llevaban alrededor de un año en servicio en la Guardia Civil, un cuerpo policial de carácter militar, objetivo prioritario de ETA que en su medio siglo de historia ha asesinado a 206 de sus miembros.

El atentado de hoy se produce solo veinticuatro horas después de que la banda terrorista, que mañana cumple 50 años, intentara una matanza con la colocación de una furgoneta cargada con más de 200 kilos de explosivo frente al cuartel de la Guardia Civil en Burgos, provincia del norte de España.

Más de 60 personas sufrieron heridas leves a causa de ese atentado que ocasionó grandes daños materiales.

El atentado de hoy, el primero en Mallorca con víctimas mortales, es el noveno de ETA en lo que va de año y eleva a tres el número de víctimas mortales en 2009, tras el asesinato el pasado 19 de junio, también con una bomba-lapa, del inspector de policía Eduardo Puelles, en la localidad vasca de Arrigoriaga.

En sus 40 años de actividad violenta (el primer asesinato que se le atribuye data de 1968), la organización terrorista surgida el 31 de julio de 1959, ha asesinado a casi mil personas en su busca de la independencia del País Vasco.

En los últimos meses sufrió importantes reveses policiales en Francia, donde suelen esconderse sus cabecillas, y en España, con la detención de varios de sus principales dirigentes.

El Gobierno anunció que el jefe del Ejecutivo, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, se trasladará a Palma de Mallorca para asistir al velatorio de los fallecidos.

El ministro del Interior, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, también se trasladará a la isla para supervisar las labores de investigación del atentado, así como la ministra de Defensa, Carmen Chacón.

El atentado recibió la condena unánime del Ejecutivo y de los partidos de oposición en España, además de la transmitida por diversas instituciones y Gobiernos de todo el mundo
